A discussion covers alternative processes posed in literature, in particular regarding the reactor section of the process; world gross domestic product and global installed ethylene nameplate capacity; specific energy for ethylene production over the last 50 yr; different thermal cracking technologies; mechanism of ethane dehydrogenation/cracking; requirements of the ideal thermal cracking process; different catalysts; and direct and indirect heating processes for production of ethylene.
