Abstract
We all know the Dutch story of the 'never-ending spiral' of land subsidence caused by drainage and oxidation of peat. But how does it really work and what can be expected for the future? Anne-Catherine Dieudonné explains the fundamentals and addresses the current frontiers of research. Is there indeed no end to subsiding peatlands?
