Abstract

A research program was carried out to validate a numerical code describing the flow and combustion in a solid fuel ramjet. Computational data were compared with experimental data, obtained by burning cylindrical polyethylene fuel grains. Emphasis was laid on the
comparison of predicted and experimental regression rates. Experiments and computations were performed over a wide range of operational conditions of the solid fuel ramjet. These conditions varied from Mach numbers of 2 to 5 and altitudes up to 15 km. It was found that the agreement of experimental and computational data was quite well. However, power
exponents of the regression rate dependency on the air mass flow rate were over-predicted. This is attributed to the assumed dependency of the effective heat of gasification on e.g. the air mass flow rate. In addition several computational methods to determine the regression rate were compared. It was found that the methodology to determine the regression rate by
computation may affect the calculated regression rate (distribution).
