CBCI and FACET: Lessons learned from two EU Interreg projects on circular and biobased constructions

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a conference

Description

During the years 2020 and 2022 the Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy (CoEBBE) and more specifically its research group Biobased Constructions participated in two EU Interreg projects that dealt with circular and biobased constructions in the Netherlands. This paper tracks the record of these two projects through the activities of the research group. Regarding the CBCI project (Circular and Biobased Construction Industry), the main interest was laid on the monitoring and evaluating of the “Emergis Living Lab” in Goes. A circular and biobased pilot structure of the Emergis Clinic company subsidized by the Interreg project. In addition to that, experimental structures were built by CoEBBE to compliment, and build upon the knowledge of the Emergis pilot. In a similar manner, the FACET project (Facilitating the Adoption of Circular Economy in the Tourism industry) tracked the circular design aspects of the circular bungalows constructed at the Paardekreek camping facility in Kortgene as well as the Biobased Beleven pilot of HZ University of Applied Sciences scheduled for completion in December 2022. The lessons learned from the two EU Interreg projects in terms of construction, as well as stakeholders collaboration, and the general research and educational aims of CoEBBE indicate an innovative but intricate field of operations for the biobased and circular construction industry of the Netherlands. Findings were produced through structural and temperature testing, interviews, and in situ monitoring that reveal the advantages and disadvantages of the pilot structures of CBCI and FACET.
