In this panel we explore the near and long-term future of value sensitive design (VSD). Many in public and private sectors and in civil society are realizing that taking our values seriously means that we need to ensure those values effectively inform our design of technology which, in turn, shapes people’s lives. VSD offers a highly developed set of theory, tools, and methods to systematically do so. While VSD has experienced good success with appropriation in the research community, as it makes its foray into industry much is yet to be done to support widespread, meaningful adoption. The time is now ripe to ask: What near term next steps for value sensitive design? What longer term vision? Panelists and panel moderator include senior and younger scholars working in VSD; as a group they represent a diversity of fields including computer science, design, ethics, information, and moral philosophy. Thus, the panel is poised to discuss VSD’s future within a multi-generational frame.
