Research interests

Dr Nthabi Mohlakoana has over 20 years of experience in research focusing on energy policy implementation, energy access and use as well as gender mainstreaming in the energy sector. She has a keen interest on the Energy Transition issues and impacts on energy users. Her research at TU Delft focuses on European Energy Communities and how community driven interventions can facilitate affordable and clean energy for all residents.  She is also part of a three year project European Commission funded project known as Waterwarmth. This project explores the possibilities of Aquathermal Energy (AE) using surface water for heating and cooling purposes. Her role in this project includes an analysis of policies and governance mechanisms that would lead to positive implementation of AE projects in the North Sea region and beyond. Her in-depth work experience in South Africa and other global south regions includes her time at Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST) where she focused on research concerning the energy transition with a focus on the socio-economic issues such as energy access, energy poverty, jobs, skills development, gender as well as impact on communities and their livelihoods.
