My research surrounds reinforcement learning-based integrated traffic management systems for large-scale motorway networks. Specifically, the aim is to design a system that combines various control measures, such as ramp metering, variable speed limits and dynamic rerouting, to optimise conditions across a network as a whole. A key challenge is scalability, both in terms of the controlled network and the number of inputs and outputs. To address this, I am focusing on deep reinforcement learning, which enables systems to adapt to complex traffic dynamics and effectively manage large amounts of data. Additionally, I am developing a framework to support the use of microscopic traffic simulations in research projects and teaching.
