Research profile

Lucas joined TU Delft in November 2022 as a PhD Candidate at Delft AI Energy Lab. He is working in collaboration with Alliander to study how to incorporate machine learning techniques to improve the state estimation of distribution networks. He is also a member of the IEPG  group and the EEMCS department.

Lucas obtained his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with power systems specialization from Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay. During 2018-2019 he did his M.Sc. in Future Power Networks at Imperial College London under the Chevening scholarship, where the focus was to learn the unique challenges posed by power networks of the 21st century with a high penetration of renewables, electric vehicles, and storage. His thesis studied the feasibility of energy storage in the Uruguayan network (see publications). He graduated with distinction and with the prize for outstanding achievement.

He has experience in the renewable energy industry, doing power flow studies, dynamic simulations, and wind/solar farm design among other electrical studies.

He was also a teacher assistant at Universidad de la Republica from 2014 to 2018, teaching electrical machines courses, and a researcher at ORT University from 2020 to 2021 studying EV charging under uncertainty.

Finally, before starting his PhD he worked at the public sector at the Secretary of Energy of the Uruguayan Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining as an electric engineering consultant for three years.
