Abstract

Chi.ti.ni.spi.ril’lum N.L. neut. n. chitinum, chitin; Gr. fem. n. spira spiral; N.L. dim. neut. n. spirillum a small spiral. N.L. neut. n. Chitinispirillum, a spirillum utilizing chitin as substrate.
The genus Chitinispirillum is currently classified in the class Chitinispirillia, which forms a deep-branching lineage within the phylum Fibrobacterota. Its closest relative is the genus Chitinivibrio, which is also a member of the Fibrobacterota. These two genera comprise alkaliphilic fermentative anaerobes utilizing chitin as the only substrate. Members of Chitinispirillum are moderately salt-tolerant obligate alkaliphiles inhabiting anoxic sediments of soda lakes. The genus includes a single species C. alkaliphilum, which is the type species of the genus. DNA G + C content (mol%): 42.9 (genome). Type species: Chitinispirillum alkaliphilum Sorokin et al. 2016, VL170.
